Attractions in Koh Phangan

Other than the full moon party, there are a number of attractions on Koh Phangan, not least of which are dozens of spectacular beaches and bays. The snorkeling and diving around Koh Phangan are both quite good so there are numerous underwater attractions, and the interior of the island features many beautiful waterfalls.

1 Than Sadet Waterfall

Location : Baan Tai Than Sadet Waterfall Than Sadet Waterfall was first visited by the Thai Royalty in 1888 when King Rama V left an inscription on a rock. The inscription still remains today and King Rama V revisited the same spot over 10 times. The present King Bhu Mibol has also been to this sacred series of falls, where the river waters are used in certain Royal Ceremonies, where water is obtained from only a few sources around Thailand. It is a fairy tale of huge granite boulders and multitudes of fresh water pools and you can walk its full 3 km length. The falls are more like huge stepping stones and can be approached from numerous places; either from the magnificent beach of Haad Than Sadet or on the road into Than Sadet (beware; only experienced motorcyclists should attempt the Than Sadet road, otherwise take a boat, taxi or hire a jeep).

How to get there
1. Express boat is middle boat, it to have a capacity for 150 persons, services 2 times daily. It takes around 4 hours for the journey.
2. Night boat is normal boat and transport goods, 2 steps , have capacity for 160 persons. Travel in night time, also provides a bed for total passengers, services 2 times daily. It takes around 8 hours for the journey.
3. Ferry boat is the large boat and transport goods, have capacity of passenger around 500 persons with car, truck or van around 50 vehicles. Services 4 times daily, it takes around 6 hours for the journey.

2 Khao Ra

Location : Baan Chaloklum Khao Ra Khao Ra stands 630 meters tall and offers incredible views over Chaloklum and Thong Nai Pan for those who climb to the top. The viewpoint is the highest peak on Koh Phangan. On a good day with clear visibility you can see all the way to Koh Tao. The route is not too strenuous, but the path can be difficult to follow at times.

How to get there
Getting there is not easy but very rewarding and your trek should begin at the village of Ban Madua Wan passing the Phaeng Waterfall. It is highly recommend to bring a guide, which can be arranged for as little as 500 baht.

3 Elephant Trekking

Location : Baan Chaloklum Elephant Trekking Just outside Chaloklum on Koh Phangan, you can experience an elephant ride through the island's jungle. Enjoy gentle ride on the back of a Thai elephant, lurching and rolling like a crazy drunken fairground ride, pluck ripe rambutan as you pass beneath the boughs. But hang on tight as these majestic old gentlemen of the forests negotiate the slippery, rock-strewn streams, hurrying onwards towards the cool dark rainforests of Koh Phangan Paradise Island.

4 Kick Boxing

Location : Rin Beach Kick Boxing Just as in most parts of Thailand, Koh Phangan loves its Thai Boxing. The island’s three stadiums are located in Thongsala, Haad Rin and Now Thong Nai Pan Noi. Wherever you are on Koh Phangan, it is always easy to find a Muay Thai fight to watch.
There are usually about six fights a night with local and visiting Thai fighters and a few Farang. To find out when the next big night is, try and decipher what one of the pick-ups with really tinny speakers is saying, look out for the posters or ask aroung, Prince on the door is usually 350 Baht.
If you want to learn the noble art, there are a few good school on the island with English speaking tuition and some very good facilities.

How to get there
There are three stadiums in Thongsala, three stadiums in Baan Tai and two in Haad Rin so you'll easily be able to catch a fight during your stay. Thai Boxing is located in the gulf of Thailand just 20 kilometers north of Koh Samui.

5 Viewpoint at Wat Khao Tham

Location : Baan Tai Bay Viewpoint at Wat Khao Tham Wat Khao Tam is located in Ban Tai and is a great viewpoint. It is easy to access by moped and there are many sunset bars on the hillside of Nai Wok. Haad Rin has viewpoints at either side of Haad Rin Nok and on the road out of Haad Rin. But in fact there are viewpoints pretty much anywhere on the island, just stop for a minute to appreciate it.

How to get there
Turn left just before the Ban Tai Market. The signs to the entrance concrete road to cave about distance of 1 kilometer.

6 Chaloklum Village

Location : Chaloklum Bay Chaloklum Village Chaloklum Village is the main fishing port on the northern part of Koh Phangan. It has a lot of inexpensive seafood restaurants serving all kinds of fresh delicacies including locally caught squids. There are also a few bars to visit and Chaloklum is home to Paradise Waterfall, a fantastic hillside nightclub.
The maritime roots have encouraged several dive school to locate here and there are numerous dive and snorkelling sites nearby, It is fairly mountainous and gets more rugged as you head east, thus there are a number of trails to climb if you're into walking, waterfalls to visit ad the Chinese Temple just outside the village.

How to get there
Chaloklum Bay is located in the northern part of Koh Pha Ngan about 15 kilometers from the port Tong Sala. Local buses are available for transportation daily.

7 Phaeng Waterfall

Location : Baan Madeua Whan Phaeng Waterfall Phaeng Waterfall is one of the major waterfalls on Koh Phangan. There is a steep 250 meters jungle trail walk to get up to the impressive fall. If you walk another 200 meters path up, you will reach a fantastic mountaintop viewpoint. Nearby, there is also a long winding foot trail that leads up the mountain Kao Ra peak and viewpoint.

8 Wang Sai Waterfall

Location : Thong Nai Pan Beach Wang Sai Waterfall Wang Sai Waterfall is sited on the north-west coast of Koh Phangan, close to Mae Had. It has a number of pools to cool off in and the flow is best after heavy rains. It is not the largest waterfall on Koh Phangan, but it is a gorgeous stretch of fresh water in a beautiful spot.

How to get there
The Wang Sai Waterfall in Koh Phangan sits on Ro Po Cho Road and can be reached by driving up at the junction of Satun Langu Road and Ban Ko Ta. From there, the Wang Sai Waterfall in Koh Phangan is roughly 25 kilometers. This is the easiest route to take to get to the Wang Sai Waterfall in Koh Phangan.

9 Wat Pho Herbal Sauna

Location : Baan Tai Bay Wat Pho Herbal Sauna At Wat Pho, visitors can relax and enjoy the many benefits of a traditional herbal steam sauna. To create the herbal steam that is fed into the sauna, lemongrass is added to hot water which is heated by a log wood fire. Whether you have been out partying too hard or just feel like give yourself a good treatment, this is the place to go to. Herbal sauna has many health benefits not limited to reducing high cholesterol levels to the treatment of skins diseases such as eczema. Most health retreats also offer herbal sauna’s and steam rooms so check out one located near you.

How to get there
Located in Ban Tai, the Wat Pho herbal sauna is a 10 minute drive from Thong Sala pier.

10 Thong Sala Walking Street

Location : Thong Sala Thong Sala Walking Street Each Saturday Taladkkao Road in Thong Sala spring to life with its weekly walking market. Vendors from across the island come to tout their wares that range from gourmet goodies, funky beach clothes, accessories and ethic handicrafts. With somethink for everyone, visitors can stock up on souvenirs or better still sample the best of local cusine. Mouth watering treats include fresh sushi, spicy seafood salads and curries of every colour. When tried of the hustle and bustle, kick back with a beer at one of the surrounding bars and restuarants.

11 Chinese Temple

Location : Baan Chaloklum Chinese Temple The Chinese Temple on Koh Phangan exists today due to the faith of Mrs Malawan. In 1990, when the island still was by large without electricity, Mrs Malawan came to Sangthom Temple on Koh Phangan for a ceremony to present the robes to the priests. One night when Mrs Malawan and some friends were sleeping outside, she dreamt about the Chinese Buddha, Jaomae Kuanim. The Buddha told her to build a firelight for the people. Mrs Malawan then returned to Bangkok to raise the funds and building was completed in 1992.

How to get there
Chinese Temple is located at Moo 7, Ban Chaloklum, on the road heading north from Thong Sala to Chaloklum. There are 9 km from Thong Sala to the Chinese temple.

12 Wat Maduea Whan

Location : Baan Madeua Whan Wat Maduea Whan In addition to the sandy beaches and the sea, Koh Phangan offers cultural attractions such as Wat Maduea Wan as well. The temple is located at Mu 3 where a replica of the Lord Buddha’s footprint is enshrined on the hilltop Mondop.

How to get there
To reach the temple, take a songthaew from for a total distance of approximately 3 kilometers for a fare of 20 baht / trip / person.

13Slip N Fly

Location : Thong Sala - Chaloklum Road Slip N Fly The park is located at the Thong Sala - Chaloklum road and is a different kind of waterpark. Strictly speaking, it is rather a party park with two 40-meter-long water slides (similar to a ski jumping hill), a 'bodyboard' free-form water slide, a swimming pool and a restaurant & bar with poolside table. The park can also be rented for private events such as company trips, bachelor parties or birthday parties.
