Koh Tao Dive Sites

Koh Tao provides great diving in all of South East Asia and is most popular, and is one of the top 10 place for diving site. Koh Tao has loads of beach dive sites, but 2 major dive sites are Shark Island and southwest pinnacle. Both are exceptional sites with great variety of reef fish and alluring rocky formations, maximum depth 32 m.

Many international diving agencies are represented on this small island, including PADI, SSI IANTD, BSAC and NAUI. All course level are available from beginner to professional. All course levels are available from beginner to professional, including special courses like UW- photography and technical diving (nitrox) for the more adventurous, so if you just fancy a few days of fun diving or wish to go on with your underwater career, it's all here. Actually Koh Tao has become the leading area in Thailand for Instructor Development Centers (IDC). IDC's are held at the larger dive resorts or shops with courses running every two months.

1 Ao Leuk Bay

Location : South East of Koh Tao Ao Leuk Ao Leuk is located of Koh Tao's South East Coast. The bay is well sheltered and has a flat sandy bottom at 12 meters with a fringing reef running right around the bay. The reef has a good variety of corals including, Stag Horn, Brain and large formations of Star corals, amongst the corals you will find brightly coloured Christmas tree worms. On the sand you will see yellowfin Goatfish, blennys and bulldozer shrimps.

2 Chumporn Pinnacle

Location : North West of Koh Tao Chumporn Pinnacle Located approximately 11 km northwest, this site is widely regarded as one of the best in the region. One main huge granite pinnacle and a series of smaller ones rising from the bottom at 36 m to within 14 m of the surface, covered with anemones and their attendant Pink Clown Fishes. Large shoals of Great and Cheveron Barracuda, schools of Trevally, Batfish and large Groupers are commonly spotted. Less common but still possible to see are Spanish Mackerel and Scorpion Fish. This great site also plays host to seasonal visits by Whale sharks and Manta Rays.

3 Green Rock

Location : North West of Koh Tao Green Rock An exciting Koh Tao dive site of granite boulders and swim throughs. The main pinnacle almost breaks the surface dropping to depths of around 27 meters. On the coast of Koh Nangyuan, this Koh Tao dive site is only a 15 minute boat ride. Green Rock, Koh Tao is a popular dive site. This is a good place to see green and hawksbill turtles. Green Rock makes an interesting night-dive. The triggerfish secure themselves in the smaller crevices for the night and the parrotfish sleep in their cocoons while the nocturnal community comes to life.

4 Hin Ngam Bay

Location : South East of Koh Tao Hin Ngam Bay This shallow dive site is great for student divers to practice their skills. A good option for fun divers is to get dropped off at Hin Ngam (on the way into Aow Leuk) as it offers a wider variety of marine life and is also a little bit deeper.

5 Hin Wong

Location : East of Koh Tao Hin Wong Hin Wong Pinnacle with its stunning blue soft corals at 26 m. These sites also offer the chance of encountering Banded Sea Snakes, Unicorn Surgeon fish, Parrot fish and the occasional passing Black Tip Reef Shark. From this side of the island, the lush, steep jungle slopes makes a magnificent back drop. On a clear day, divers on the surface can even spot Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

6 Japanese Garden

Location : North West of Koh Tao, Around Nang Yuan Island Japanese Garden Japanese Gardens is a popular dive site and another good choice for beginner divers. Located around Koh Nang Yuan, it contains many different varieties of hard corals, and resembles a garden – hence the name. Japanese Gardens is one of the three large bays frequented by divers and snorkelers on Koh Tao. Japanese Gardens enjoys reef across the whole bay from paddling depth to around 14 metres. It sits directly opposite Twins, separated only by the sand bar which joins the two peaks of Koh Nangyuan.

7 Laem Thien Pinnacle

Location : East of Koh Tao Laem Thien Pinnacle Laem Thian for exploring a series of connected swim-throughs & canyons. These sites also offer the chance of encountering Banded Sea Snakes, Unicorn Surgeon fish, Parrot fish and the occasional passing Black Tip Reef Shark. From this side of the island, the lush, steep jungle slopes makes a magnificent back drop. On a clear day, divers on the surface can even spot Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

8 Light House

Location : North East of Koh Tao Light House Light House, a favourite place for Turtle spotting. These sites also offer the chance of encountering Banded Sea Snakes, Unicorn Surgeon fish, Parrot fish and the occasional passing Black Tip Reef Shark. From this side of the island, the lush, steep jungle slopes makes a magnificent back drop. On a clear day, divers on the surface can even spot Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

9 Mango Bay

Location : North of Koh Tao Mango Bay Mango Bay is located with a magnificent view of what is probably Koh Tao's most beautiful bay. Mango Bay is also one of the most beautiful places to snorkel and scuba dive on Koh Tao. The landscape consists of high rocky cliffs and lush green hillsides rising up from the water's edge and offering breathtaking views of the gulf to the north of Ko Tao.

10 Nang Yuan Pinnacle

Location : North West of Koh Tao Nang Yuan Pinnacle Nang Yuan Pinnacle is located on the Northwest side between Koh Nang Yuan and Koh Tao Island just North from Japanese Gardens. This dive is started at a small pinnacle sitting just below the surface which descends to 22 m, on which can be found numerous Eels, Rays, Green or a Hawksbill Turtle.

11 Sail Rock

Location : South West of Koh Tao Sail Rock This pinnacle that just out of the ocean is roughly half way between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. With regular sightings of whale sharks and giant baracuda, plus the experience of ascending inside a chimney, this dive site is a favourite for experienced and technical divers.

12 Samran Pinnacles

Location : South of Koh Tao Samran Pinnacles This submerged set of three rocky pinnacles is located just off Sail Rock between Koh Tao & Koh Phangan and can only be dived at certain times of the year, generally between May and September. The formation rises from the ocean floor at 30 meters up to a minimum depth of 13 meters. The rocks are covered in soft corals, sponges and a wealth of colourful anemones. Just off the rocks hanging in the mild to strong currents you will find large groupers, great barracuda and shoals of big eye jacks.

13 Shark Island

Location : South East of Koh Tao Shark Island One of the most varied site in terms of marine life. Located about 300m southeast of Ao Leuk, this small granite peak rises out of the water from a sandy bottom at 20-24 m. Enjoy a huge variety of corals, sea whips and Gorgonian Sea Fans covering the multiple pinnacles. Some of the most usual marine life includes Blue Spotted Sting Rays, Scribbled Filefish, Harlequin Sweetlips, Starry Pufferfish, various Groupers and Titan Triggerfish that sometimes like nibbling the fins of divers who get too close to their nesting site. Although Shark Island is suitable for divers of all levels, strong currents may be encountered, especially during full moon, allowing the possibility of exciting drift dives.

14 South West Pinnacle

Location : South West of Koh Tao  South West Pinnacle Situated 13 km southwest, depth ranging from 30 m upward, a series of seven pinnacles form an underwater mountain range, with the largest peaks rising at 5 m below the surface, covered with sea anemones. Along the lower edges of the site is an abundance of whip coral and gardens of large sea fans. Impressive Baracudas over a meter long can be seen, as well as massive Groupers, schools of black spotted Snappers, Emperors, Sweetlips and Batfish. Not to forget that Manta Rays and Whale sharks as well as Leopard Sharks may also pass by.

15 Tanote Bay

Location : East of Koh Tao Tanot Bay Well preserved bay away from the crowds with excellent snorkeling. Tanote Bay is located south of Laem Thian in a protected bay, superb for snorkelers. The reef slopes from around 2 meters below sea level to around 18 meters. Tanote Bay is a beautiful, secluded, pristine white sand beach, nestled between the rugged headlands of the east coast of Koh Tao. The bay is famous for it's excellent snorkeling and scuba diving where vibrant coral reefs dot the clear blue shores The beach is one of the best seashores on the island, with beautiful views of nearby Shark Island, Koh Phangan and tourist attractions.

16 Three Rocks

Location : South West of Koh Tao Three Rocks Three Rocks dive site consists of 3 superb underwater pinnacles. The sandy bottom is at 14 meters deep. This spot is suitable for all levels of divers even beginners and it is actually a great site for dive courses in Koh Tao. The rocks are covered with beautiful coral and are home of all the usual reef fishes of the Gulf of Thailand as well as the cute Green and Hawksbill Sea turtles.

17 Twin Peaks

Location : North West of Koh Tao Twins Peak Koh Nang Yuan is a small island and located only 15 minutes from Koh Tao. It is famous for its diving spots and its great snorkeling beach. Koh Nang Yuan consist of two main pinnacles and a small deeper "little brother". A prefect site for both training activities and fun drives with a depth rang of 18 m to 5 m surrounded by soft white sand dotted with the unusual symbiotic relationship of Goby fishes and their blind Shrimp house mates. Twins offers the chance to spot large Groupers, Blue Ringed Angelfish, Yellow Racoon Butterfly fish, Parrots and Wrasses of many kinds. Not to forget "Mork and Mindy", a friendly pair of the uncommon Saddleback Clownfish, and enjoy your safety stop surrounded by hundreds of Yellow Tail Barracudas. This island trio lies a stones throw away from Koh Tao and is stunning.

18 White Rock

Location : West of Koh Tao Three Rocks A very popular dive site located 1 km off Sairee.It boasts a large coral garden situated between two distinct granite pinnacles to the north and south side and a vast array of bottom day time and noctural inhabitants. With a depth range of 26 m to 5 m, it is suitable for every experience level. White Eyed Moray and Blue Spotted Sting Rays are commonly sighted, as well as the infamous Trigger Fish. Several species of Barracuda routinely visit the site, it is particularly impressive to see them hunting on night dives, following divers torch beams to spot their dinner. Night diving also unveils many different kinds of Feather Stars, hunting Cone Shell, feeding Sting Rays, Black Spotted Porcupine fish, sleeping Parrot fish and Monocle Beam fish. You may also be lucky enough to spot a Hawksbill Turtle.
