Attractions in Koh Samui

As the second most popular Thai island, Koh Samui is easy to get to via land, boat, or air. There are numerous boats from Surat Thani province on the Thai mainland as well as from neighboring islands Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The Koh Samui international airport is served primarily by Bangkok airways, which flies to and from Koh Samui and seven domestic and international destinations. Once on the island there are many ways of getting around Koh Samui. Rental bicycles, motorbikes, and cars, both with and without drivers, are easily available, as are songtaews and taxis for getting around and between beaches.

1 Grandfather & Grandmother Rocks (Hinta Hinyai)

Location : Lamai Beach Hinta Hinyai The 'Grandfather Rock' and 'Grandmother Rock' also known as Hin Ta and Hin Yai which located between Lamai and Hua Thanon beach. These formations look like the male and female genitalia-shaped rock. A local story tells of an old couple whose ship was wrecked in the bay. Their body's were washed ashore to create the rocks.

How to get there
Take the main route no. 4169 on Koh Samui’s southeast coast, about 2 kilometres south of central Lamai Beach. It's about 11 kilometres away from Chaweng Beach and 17 kilometres from the airport.

2 Big Buddha (Phra Yai Ko Fan)

Location : Big Buddha Beach Big Buddha (Phra Yai Ko Fan) Big Buddha is most popular attraction in Samui, many tourist come to marvel at the sheer size and beauty of this remarkable statue at some point during their holiday. Visible from several kilometers away and even from the air when arriving on or leaving the island, the 12 meter tall golden image stands proud.

At the base of the structure, several shops and restaurants cater to the needs of devotees and tourists alike. Wat Phra Yai is in the Northeast of Samui on route 4171 near the airport.

How to get there
Take the main route no. 4169 up to the northeast region of Koh Samui, then turn off on route no. 4171. The temple is about 3 kilometres directly north of Koh Samui International Airport, 3 km east of Bophut Beach and 7.5 km away from Cheweng Beach.

4 Namuang Waterfall

Location : Between Nathon and Hua Thanon Namuang Waterfall Namuang Waterfall is located 11 km south from Nathon at Ban Thurian. There are 2 waterfalls. Na Muang one is 18 meter high and can be reached by vehicle. Na Muang two is about 80 meters high and can only be reached by a 30 minute walk.

How to get there
From Nathon, drive along the main road route no. 4169 for about 11 kilometres until reach to Na Muang One Waterfall at Baan Thurian. The park entrance is about one kilometre up this road and from the parking lot, it’s only a walk of a few hundred metres to get there.

5 Hin Lad Waterfall

Location : South of Nathon town Hin Lad Waterfall Hin Lad Waterfall is found just South of Nathon town. A three kilometer jungle path leads you from the Ring Road to the fall. Follow Route 4172 to the eastern end, 2km south of Nathon. The walk is along a stunning jungle path, and can be completed with a refreshing dip in the waterfall pool, so we think it’s worth the trip. Bring food and drink and plan plenty of time to take in the sights; you won’t want to leave. Strong walking shoes and leg protection is recommended for the walk.

How to get there
In order to get to the starting point of the 2 kilometre trek, you need to take route 4172 from Nathon for about 2 kilometres and from here you will see signs for the point at which you can start your jungle trek.

6 Lat Ko Viewpoint

Location : Between Chaweng Beach and Lamai Beach Lat Ko Viewpoint This viewpoint is the best of view that you can see the sea in panorama view. Lad Koh also known as "Zenith Viewpoint" is located on route 4169 between Chaweng Beach and Lamai Beach. This Koh Samui landmark is nicely built with a path toward the rocky sea shore offering a breathtaking sunrise and a panoramic ocean view over the whole Chaweng bay area.

How to get there
Drive from Chaweng Beach it take 15 minutes and drive pass through Dr. Frogs Restaurant then you will see the viewpoint in your left hand side.

7 Wat Plai Laem

Location : Bophut Beach Wat Plai Laem Wat Plai Laem holds two giant, colorful statues that will immediately catch the eye. Inside you'll find a large golden Buddha and beautiful featuring a striking white 18-arm image of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion. Close to the Big Buddha temple, Wat Plai Laem offers visitors a view into Chinese-Thai beliefs as well as some elaborate Buddhist-themed art and architecture.

At Wat Plai Laem you can feed massive carp and catfish in the lake, feed costs 10 Baht per bag.

How to get there
Take the main route 4169 up to the northeast region of Samui, then turn off on route 4171. It is very close to the Big Buddha temple, about 3 kilometres directly north of Samui International Airport, 3km east of Bophut Beach and 7.5 kms away from Chaweng Beach.

8 Magic Buddha Garden

Location : Ban Maret Magic Buddha Garden The magic buddha garden is hidden in the hills of Samui. You can see several statues, temples and waterfalls which are build by one man in the last 20 years. A Samui an fruit farmer, Nim Thongsuk, started to build the garden in 1976 when he was 77 years old.

How to get there
To get there is a bit difficult as the only concrete road leading there is a military road and is not accessible by "normal" people ( in the last couple of month the guards let you pass if you want to visit the garden so give it a try). So, the only way to get there is through the jungle, rivers and mountains by a four-wheel-drive jeep. The journey takes about 2 hours starting at the back of the Lamai temple and is only recommended for experienced "outdoor" drivers.

9 Laem Sor Chedi

Location : Bang Kao Laem Sor Chedi In the grounds of Wat Laem Sor, this ornately designed Chedi (Pagoda) sits at the rocky water's edge. Covered in countless small yellow tiles, it appears golden when viewed from a short distance. Hotels near Bang

How to get there
It's at the far South of the island off the 4170 road between Ban Tale and Ban Pang Ka. Follow the track with a sign that reads "Waikiki Bungalows", and It's at the end of that.

10 Thale Nai (Inner Sea)

Location : Ang Thong National Marine Park  Thale Nai (Inner Sea) or Lake in the Mountain Thale Nai or Lake in the Mountain situates in Mae Ko Island. It is a large natural pond surrounded by complicated limestone mountain. The area has under-water hole connected to the outer sea. There has been assumed that the limestone layer under the lake was sink so that cause the lake, this incident had been occurred simultaneously with the islands, or it might have been occurred by the change of chemical condition so did the caves.

11 Samui Go Kart

Location : Bophut Beach Samui Go Kart Samui Go Kart Speedway is a professional go-kart facility with high performance go-karts. The track has the most exciting racing on the island and attracts many foreigners to race here. The Speedway offers different sizes of go-karts, ranging from 100cc up to 200cc. Samui Go Kart have 3 types of karts rated by max speed. 40s for kids and women, 75s for the more daring, then 120s for reckless hooks and people who like to live on the edge.

The Samui Go Kart Speedway is located in the north-east corner of the island in the Bophut area. The track is just a 10-minute drive from Koh Samui Airport.

12 Namuang Safari Park

Location : Na Mueang Namuang Safari Park Adventures in Namuang Safari Park Samui is another popular excursion on the island. This ecologically-sound experience begins with an elephant ride around the coconut plantations and jungles of the island’s interior. It’s followed by an elephant show and an opportunity for you to feed the elephants by hand. A sturdy 4x4 jeep then takes up into the mountains to various viewpoints where you enjoy spectacular panoramic views that will take your breath away. After being dropped off – somewhere in the jungle – you can follow a rural path which leads to the 80-metre high Namuang Waterfall where you can relax and swim in one of the natural pools.

13 Phang Ka Snake Farm

14 Samui Crocodile Farm

15 Wat Sila Ngu

Location : Between Lamai Beach and Hua Thanon Beach Phra That Hin Ngu Wat Sila Ngu Temple is located between Lamai and Hua Thanon next to Rocky Beach resort. This temple said to contain a relic of the Lord Buddha. The golden chedi facing the temple's entrance is a popular place of worship, here you can enjoy the nice and warm seabreeze right at the beginning when you step in because the temple is right next to the beach. Not only that the temple usually have the temple fair every year, so if you are lucky you can shop for the cheap stuff right next to the temple wall.

How to get there
Wat Sila Ngu is on the 4169 ring-road, one kilometre south of the Genital Rocks on the beach side of the road.

16 Samui Bungee Jump

Location : Chaweng Lake Samui Bungee Jump Samui Bungee Jumping is becoming a popular activity for who are strong at heart definitely have to try out. And one of the places where you can try out your courage at bungee jumping is on Samui Island.

17 Fishreman's Village Walking Street

Location : Bophut Beach Fishreman's Village Walking Street Every Friday evening Bo Phut's Fisherman's Village turns into a very popular Walking Street. 18 Lamai Guan Yu shrine

Location: Lamai Beach Lamai Guan Yu shrineThe statue of Supreme Guan Yu at Koh Samui,  a few kilometres south down the coast in Hua Thanon. One of the Chinese Warrior Gods, is the biggest one established in Thailand with a size of 12-metre height, foundation spanning 16 metres and worth TH20 million.

The statue was built to facilitate the public worship from both Thai and foreign visitors, who would come to pay homage to the place, resulting in the more number of tourists especially Chinese visiting Samui yearly.

The backdrop of the statue constitutes a museum depicting the history, racial root and birth place of Hainan Chinese who settled themselves at Koh Samui. Besides, it is open for foreign tourists to explore and learn more about the thousands years of history.

How to get there
Guan Yu shrine is an easy half-day outing from Lamai. It takes around 10 minutes by hired motorcycle or car.

19 Jungle Route 360

Location: Bophut Sub District Jungle Route 360 The new destination in Koh Samui, Jungle Route 360 invite you to see an UNSEEN 360 view around Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and Angthong Marine Park on the highest place of the island (610 metters).
