Geography in Southern Region
An idyllic tropical destination of many local and international tourists, southern region of Thailand is divided into 14 provinces with 1,825 km of the coastline. The region covers an area of 70,715 sq km. It is located on Malay Peninsula and has the Gulf of Thailand to the east and the Andaman Sea to the west. The south is connected with the central region by the narrow Kra Isthmus and borders with Malaysia to the south.

The topology can be categorised into mountain range and plateau. Th mountain ranges are Tanaosi Mountain Range, Sankala Khiri Range Phuket Chain and Nakhon Si Thammarat Chain. The highest elevation is Khao Luang at 1,835 m above sea level.

The landscape of the beach on the Gulf of Thailand side is wide, formed by the elevation of the land which creates sand dunes, lagoon and large bays. The Andaman side is formed by the drop of the land and has rugged coasts as well as mangroves. Beautiful limestone mountains can be commonly found.
